2010 - 2011 Basketball Season


                                      GRINER VOTED TO ALL-AMERICA TEAM


April 2, 2011:

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and State Farm® announced today the 2011 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team. The 10-member team, which included Baylor sophomore post Brittney Griner, was decided from a group of 40 finalists by the selection committee at an in-person meeting held during the 2011 WBCA National Convention.

Griner becomes Baylor's fourth player to make the prestigious 10-member squad, joining Sophia Young (2005 & `06), Sheila Lambert (2002) and Susie Snider Eppers (1977). Odyssey Sims, a freshman point guard, received honorable mention recognition and is the only freshman listed.

                        
                       GRINER EARNS WOODEN AWARD ALL-AMERICAN STATUS 

March 30, 2011:

Sophomore Brittney Griner, is the lone underclassman on the five-member list. She averaged a team-leading 23.0 points and 7.8 rebounds a game this season, which ranks among the NCAA Division I and Big 12 Conference leaders. In addition, Griner blocked a nation-best 170 shots. Griner was recently named Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Championship, All-Big 12 first team, Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, to the league's All-Defensive team and to the NCAA Championship Dallas Regional All-Tournament team. In addition, she is a finalist for the Naismith, Wooden and Wade Trophy awards. Griner has also been named an AP All-American

Baylor's Brittney Griner is the 2011 WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced on Tuesday.

The WBCA Defensive Player of the Year award honors the best defensive collegiate Division I women's basketball player. All Division I Conference Defensive Player's of the Year are eligible to be nominated for the award and the selection committee makes the final decision on the winner. If a conference does not select a defensive player of the year, the conference representative can select one player to be considered.

"It is a pleasure and honor for me to congratulate Brittney Griner on being named the WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "Defense wins championships, and clearly Brittney's defensive abilities have helped Baylor win a Big 12 Championship and have it on the cusp of a berth in the NCAA® Women's Final Four®."

 
                 GRINER NAMED NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Brittney Griner is the 2011 WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced on Tuesday. The WBCA Defensive Player of the Year award honors the best defensive collegiate Division I women's basketball player.

Griner, coming off a career-high 40-point performance against Green Bay in the Dallas Regional Semifinals, leads the Lady Bears (34-2) into the Dallas Regional Final tonight against Big12 Conference rival Texas A&M. The 6-foot-8 sophomore center is averaging a team-leading 23.1 points and 7.8 rebounds a game this season. In addition, she has blocked a nation-best 168 shots (an average of 4.7 blocks per game). Her career total currently stands at 391 blocked shots.

The Associated Press names Brittney Griner AP first-team All-American. Griner is averaging a team-leading 23.1 points and 7.8 rebounds a game this season, which ranks among the NCAA Division I and Big 12 Conference leaders. In addition, she has blocked a nation-best 168 shots. Griner was recently named Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Championship, All-Big 12 first team, Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and to the league's All-Defensive team. In addition, she is a finalist for both the Wooden and Naismith awards.

Brittney Griner averaged 24.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, shot 51.5 percent from the floor and 92.9 percent from the free throw line to lead Baylor to sole possession of its second Big 12 regular season championship and a school-record 15 Big 12 victories. In doing so, she was named Phillips 66 Big 12 player of the week. This award gives Griner her 12th career honor to date.

Brittney Griner, along with Danielle Adams (Texas A&M) were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Dec. 13-20. Griner (player) was honored for the third time this season and 11th week in her career. Griner was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week seven times and the league's player of the week once in 2009-10.

2010:

Brittney Griner averaged 21.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in Baylor's wins over #16 Notre Dame and Minnesota last week. She shot 48.5 percent (16-33) from the floor and hit 64.7 percent (11-17) from the free throw line. Griner posted her fifth and sixth consecutive 20-plus point games. Against Notre Dame, Griner poured in 21 points, hauled down eight rebounds and blocked four shots. She followed that with 22 points, six rebounds, a career high-tying four assists and three blocks against Minnesota.

Nov. 29, 2010:

Brittney Griner (Baylor) and Jordan Hooper (Nebraska) were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Nov. 22-29. Griner (player) earned her ninth career weekly honor while Hooper (freshman) was recognized for the second time this season.

Brittney Griner averaged 30 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.67 blocks in just 23.7 minutes of action in Baylor's three victories last week. She shot .729 (35-48) from the floor and hit .952 (20-21) from the free throw line. The 6-8 sophomore post poured in a career-high 35 points against Liberty. Griner became BU's career blocks leader, passing Danielle Wilson's 249, and moved up to No. 3 on the Big 12's career list. She now has 268 career blocks, which she accomplished in just 43 games. In addition, Griner recorded her fourth career triple-double with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks against Southeastern Louisiana. She is now one triple-double short of tying Shalee Lehning's (KSU, 2006-09) Big 12 record of five.

Sophomore Brittney Griner was named to the Associated Press' 2010-11 women's basketball preseason All-America team it was announced today. Griner, a 6-8 post, becomes Baylor's second AP preseason All-America selection, joining Sophia Young, a 2005 pick.

Griner ranked No. 2 in the voting, receiving 36 votes from a 65-member national media panel. Connecticut's Maya Moore received all 40 votes to claim top honors. Others on the five-member list were fellow Big 12 Conference player Danielle Robinson of Oklahoma, Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Jantel Lavender of Ohio State. Griner is the only sophomore listed as Moore, Lavender and Robinson are seniors and Ogwumike is a junior.

Griner set an NCAA blocked shot record as a freshman with 223 rejections. In addition, she recorded four dunks including two in one game. The Houston native averaged 18.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.4 blocks a contest en route to attaining All-American status. She was named Freshman of the Year by the USBWA and was also selected as the Big 12 Conference's Freshman of the Year, Co-Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Big 12 first team, All-Defensive team and All-Freshman team.

So far this season Griner has been named to four preseason All-America squads including the Associated Press, Sporting News, Lindy's and Athlon. She is also on the Wooden Award and Wade Trophy watch lists.

Brittney Griner has set numerous NCAA Division I, Big 12 Conference and Baylor records this season with her shot-blocking prowess, establishing a new single-season block mark with 223. She recently broke the NCAA Tournament blocked shot record, rejecting 40 through five tournament contests.

Griner has led the 27-10 Baylor squad to the NCAA Women's Final Four this season for the second time in school history averaging 18.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and a nation's-leading 6.4 blocks per game.

Griner blocked an NCAA tournament record 14 shots leading fourth-seeded Baylor to a 49-33 victory over No. 5 seed Georgetown in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

After playing less than 7 minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, Griner then blocked 13 shots after halftime to break the previous mark of 11 in a game that Pauline Jordan of UNLV set against Colorado in 1989.

Baylor freshman Brittney Griner earned State Farm Coaches' All-Region 5 honors and is a candidate for the 2010 State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team. Former Lady Bear Sophia Young became Baylor's first two-time WBCA All-American with selections in 2005 and `06. Suzie Snider Eppers was Baylor's first WBCA All-American in 1977 and Sheila Lambert was honored in 2002.

Baylor's Brittney Griner earned five Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference women's basketball awards the league office announced today. The rookie post was named the league's Freshman of the Year, Co-Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Big 12 first team, All-Defensive team and All-Freshman team.

Brittney Griner (Baylor) was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Feb. 22-28, she was recognized for the seventh time this season. Baylor has nabbed Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors nine times as Shanay Washington and Kimetria Hayden have also earned the award this season. Kelsey Griffin (Nebraska) earned Player of the Week honors, her 10th career award and fifth of the season.

Brittney Griner (Baylor), Taelor Karr (Kansas State) and Yvonne Turner (Nebraska) were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Jan. 11-17. Karr (freshman) and Turner (player) were honored for the first time this season while Griner (freshman) earned her fifth mention.

Griner averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.5 blocks while playing 39 minutes a game in Baylor's win over No. 13 Oklahoma and loss to No. 11 Nebraska. She shot 50 percent (11-of-22) from the floor and 62 percent (8-of-13) from the free throw line. The 6-8 post raised her season blocks total to 105 and moved up to fifth place on the Big 12's single-season blocks list, just 15 shy of breaking the single season record.

Baylor freshman Brittney Griner was featured twice this weekend on ESPN. ESPN's first-ever Women's Basketball GameDay, on Sat., Jan. 16, ran a short feature on the Lady Bears' 6-8 post while the network's Outside the Lines program also aired a feature on Griner.

Brittney Griner (Baylor), Kelsey Griffin (Nebraska) and Amanda Thompson (Oklahoma) and were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Dec. 28-Jan. 3. Griner (freshman) picked up her fourth honor of the season while Griffin (player) earned her seventh career award and second of the season and Thompson (player) was recognized for the second time in her career.

The honor marks the fourth time a Baylor rookie has earned Big 12 Freshman on the Week honors, Shanay Washington was the Nov. 23 recipient.

                                  
                                   GRINER EARNS 3RD 'OF THE WEEKLY HONOR

Brittney Griner (Baylor) and Kelsey Griffin (Nebraska) were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Dec. 14-20. Griner (freshman) was recognized for the third time this season while Griffin (player) earned her sixth career award.

Brittney Griner led No. 6/5 Baylor in scoring, rebounding and blocks in its three victories last week. The 6-8 post averaged 26.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 9.0 blocks against Oral Roberts, Gonzaga and No. 14/13 Arizona State. She also recorded the program's first triple double with a career-high 34 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks vs. ORU. The 11 blocks set Big 12 and BU records for blocks in a game. 

Griner narrowly missed two more triple-doubles, coming up two blocks shy against both Gonzaga and Arizona State. She tallied 18 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks against Gonzaga and recorded 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks against the Sun Devils. For the week Griner shot 62.7 percent (32-51) from the floor and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the charity stripe and was named MVP of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic. Her 77 blocks on the season are 10 away from breaking former Lady Bear Danielle Wilson's single-season record of 86.

Baylor's Brittney Griner and Alison Lacey (Iowa State) were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Dec. 7-13. Griner (freshman) picked up her second award while Lacey (player) was honored for the third time in her career and first this season.

The honor marks the third time a Baylor rookie has earned the Phillips 66 Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors. Brittney Griner scored 25 points, had seven rebounds, a steal and three blocked shots to help Baylor beat Boston College 68-55 on Sunday in the Maggie Dixon Classic in Madison Square Garden. The 6-8 post led the Lady Bears in both scoring and rebounding. She was 12-of-24 from the floor and 1-for-3 from the charity stripe. 

Griner raised her season blocks total to 50 and continues to rank No. 2 nationally in blocks per game. She leads the Lady Bears in scoring at 17.0 points a game, averaging 24.3 over the last three outings. Griner's 50 blocks, nine games into the season, places her No. 8 on Baylor's single-season block list. She needs 37 more blocks to break former Lady Bear Danielle Wilson's single season record of 86.

Baylor's Brittney Griner and Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State) were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Nov. 23-29. Griner (freshman) picked up her first award while Riley (player) was honored for the second time this season and ninth time in her career. 

Brittney Griner averaged a team-leading 16.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 6.0 blocks in just over 24 minutes of action a game in No. 8 Baylor's four victories last week. She shot 62.5 percent (20-32) from the floor and was 26-of-32 (.813) from the free throw line. The 6-8 post added five assists and three steals. Griner registered two double-doubles, collected a career-high 26 points against Lamar and hauled down a career-best 14 rebounds against Louisiana. 

She tallied two eight-block games vs. Jacksonville State and Lamar. Griner earned World Vision Classic All-Star recognition in leading Baylor to the tournament championship. On the season, the Houston native leads the Lady Bears in scoring at 15.1 a contest.


GRINER RECEIVES FIRST COLLEGIATE HONOR

Brittney Griner received her first collegiate honor when she was named 2009-10 Big 12 Women's Basketball Preseason Freshman of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. She is joined by Danielle McCray (Kansas) as Preseason Player of the Year and Danielle Adams (Texas A&M) was chosen Preseason Newcomer of the Year. IRVING, Texas -

Griner, a 6-8 center, was ranked as the nation's top player by all recruiting services. She averaged 33 points, 15.5 rebounds, 11.7 blocks, 3.4 steals and 3.1 assists as a senior at Houston's Nimitz High School while also dunking 52 times in 32 games. The national player of the year produced career totals of 3,114 points, 1,586 rebounds, 939 blocks, 268 steals and 198 assists. Griner is the first Lady Bear to receive league Preseason Freshman of the Year honors. She was also named All-Big 12 honorable mention.

Brittney Griner finished her senior year at Houston's Adaline Nimitz High school averaging 27.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, 7.7 blocks, 3.4 steals and 2.1 assists per game. She also had a record 52 dunks in 32 games. Her career high school career totals are 3,114 points, 1,586 rebounds, 939 blocks, 268 steals and 198 assists. Nimitz season ended with a 37-2 record.
