A
New Beginning:
On September 1, 2009,
Baylor University welcomed Brittney Griner along with
3,100 other freshman students to their campus.
As
a senior basketball star at Nimitz High School, Griner averaged
27.5
points
per game, as well as, a double-double. She also recorded
11 triple-doubles to help lead the Cougars to the 2009
Texas State Championship finals.
As
the number one ranked female prep basketball player in the
country, Griner is expected to make an immediate impact to
the Lady Bears basketball program.
Many
predict that she will undoubtedly change the face of
women's basketball much like former basketball great, Wilt
"The
Stilt"
Chamberlain who stood 7-foot 1-inch and was the only man
in NBA history to score 100 points in a single game.
No,
don't expect Griner to hit the century mark in any single
game due to the fact that numerous rules have since been implemented
to prevent taller dominate centers from having an incisive
advantage over smaller defenders.
However,
Griner is definitely a force of nature to be reckoned with
and will surely impose her will against opponents at the collegiate
level. She can expect to face gimmick-defenses, with two,
three, or even four defenders swarming around her like a
nest of angry hornets, tugging at her jersey at any given time in order
to try and render her game ineffective. But don't be surprised
if those bee-like defenders get dunked on all at once. (This
Girl Can Get Up!) We'll keep you posted each week as to the progress
of Miss Griner as her basketball career unfolds at Baylor.
